What is a Dry Riser?
Dry risers are a system of valves and pipe work which enables the Fire Service to pump 
water on to upper floors of a building.
Dry risers are intended for the use of the First Service to provide a readily available means of delivering considerable quantities of water to extinguish or to prevent the spread of fire.
If your fire risk assessment concludes that you may need the intervention of the Fire Service to fight fire, you must ensure that your riser systems or hydrants are working properly. This test involves a visual inspection only as required by BS9990:2006 and any missing or damaged items are replaced.
Where do we find Dry Risers?
Dry risers will be found:
- In buildings over 18 meters above ground level
- In low level buildings where there are excessive distance from entrances (60m)
- Wet risers will be found in buildings over 60 meters above ground level
The building insurance of your property may well be invalid if the building’s dry risers (or other fire protection equipment) have not been correctly inspected and tested as per the British Standard.
Morgan Fire Protection will visually inspect the dry riser installation as described in the six-monthly testing below. If the system fails to hold pressure then all accessible inlets, outlets and joints are checked for leaks and any missing or faulty items notified. If items are replaced then a further pressure test will be carried out. The system is then drained and left ready for use. Certification is issued on satisfactory completion of the dry riser testing.
This test involves a visual inspection only, with any missing or damaged items notified and replaced. Morgan Fire Protection will check the operation and/or condition of the following: valves, straps and locks, outlet washers, blank caps and chains, hand wheels and nuts, landing outlets, inlet cabinets, doors and glass, inlet breaching valve springs and rubbers, signage.
